  • Gulls are a type of bird. They are usually white and grey with black marks on their wings.
  • Gulls are also known as seagulls.
  • There are over 50 different species of gulls.
  • Great black-backed gulls are the largest species, reaching a length of around 75 cm (30 in). Albatross are much larger but are not gulls.
  • Seagulls are typically carnivores, eating fish, crustaceans, worms and other prey. They are also scavengers and have been known to steal food from other animals, including humans!
  • Some seagulls will drop shells onto hard ground from the air in order to get the prey inside.
  • Their jaws are unhinged, allowing them to eat larger food.
  • Seagulls are found all over the world, living mostly in coastal areas or inland.
  • Seagulls show many signs of intelligence, including advanced social structures and communication.
  • They have webbed feet.
  • Some species migrate to warmer areas in the winter.
  • Gulls typically breed once a year in colonies, building nests where the females will eventually lay eggs.
