  • Tapir are mammals with a similar appearance to pigs.
  • They live in jungles and forests in Central America, South America and Southeast Asia.
  • There are four different species of tapir alive today, including Malayan tapir, mountain tapir, South American tapir and Baird’s tapir.
  • All species are listed as vulnerable or endangered due to habitat loss and hunting.
  • Tapir have a recognizable snout that resembles a short nose trunk (proboscis).
  • Tapirs are typically around 1 m (3.3 ft) in height and 2 m (6.6 ft) in length.
  • Tapir can weigh up to 300 kg (660 lb).
  • They have four toes on their front feet and three on their back.
  • Tapir can walk along the bottom of rivers while feeding.
  • They are herbivores, eating plants such as leaves, berries and fruit.
  • Tapir can live to around 30 years of age.
