Tapir are mammals with a similar appearance to pigs.

They live in jungles and forests in Central America, South America and Southeast Asia.

There are four different species of tapir alive today, including Malayan tapir, mountain tapir, South American tapir and Baird’s tapir.

All species are listed as vulnerable or endangered due to habitat loss and hunting.

Tapir have a recognizable snout that resembles a short nose trunk (proboscis).

Tapirs are typically around 1 m (3.3 ft) in height and 2 m (6.6 ft) in length.

Tapir can weigh up to 300 kg (660 lb).

They have four toes on their front feet and three on their back.

Tapir can walk along the bottom of rivers while feeding.

They are herbivores, eating plants such as leaves, berries and fruit.

Tapir can live to around 30 years of age.
